Fae Magic

All creatures who dream have the creative spark of the Fae. Creatures who come from this possibility are called Neuma, or Fae. If they are not killed, all of these creatures will eventually return to the Dreaming, the ethereal world of possibility from which they come, where living things experience dreams and where creativity comes from. All of these Dreamers may become Daydreamers and turn dreams into physical substance. “Creatures who Dream” is purposefully vague as it is up to the player if their character can or cannot use Fae Magic. Daydreamers turn the raw stuff of dreaming, déan, into magical effects called Cards.

Casting

Fae magic is spinning one’s dreams into reality or “borrowing” them from the Dreaming. Those who can weave possibility into reality are referred to as Daydreamers or Nightmares. Each Card costs 8 EXP x Current rank, minimum 8 EXP, like other spells. A Card may be cast by spending a déan to automatically will it into being (if there is a check listed in the card’s specifics, that must still be done.) It may also be cast outside of combat and stressful situations by checking Determination as the Daydreamer imagines the outcome.
Routine
Weaving with a physical act, such as an Incantation will help the caster focus, making it stronger, but they are literally just an aid, so they may be said in any language the Daydreamer prefers. A Routine could also be a dance, a set of movements or crafting an object or consumable. A Routine adds a Rank to the casting.

Gimmick
A Gimmick, is a Card at a lower-level casting than its first rank. This is such a weak casting that it does not have a mechanical advantage, just flair and does not cost déan to cast. Glamor, the ability to mask a Neuma form with a more human looking one is one of the most common Gimmicks. A gimmick may be cast for any Card the Day Dreamer knows for free. Every Neuma Character is capable of a Gimmick that is free to the character, whether or not they learn any Cards at all. It is often considered innate or natural to the Neuma or their whole kind.

Dreams and Déan

All creatures who dream produce déan, the raw possibility of dreams at a rate of about 1 déan for each hour of sleep. However, in order to feel rested and repair mental and emotional damage, a Dreamer needs at least 4 déans per day. A Daydreamer may push themselves into this reserve, but will feel tired, irritable, drained. If a Daydreamer expends their entire déan pool, they will have to check Determination to perform much of anything beyond finding a bed to rest. If a creature naturally needs a different number of hours of sleep, then their “base déan pool” is still 4 with a reserve of 4 but the time to recharge is altered.

Increasing Déan

Déan Pool
There are ways, however, to increase the amount of déan a Daydreamer has access to. First through practice, a Daydreamer can simply expand the amount of déan that they collect while sleeping. Like all pools this is expanded at a rate of 6 EXP x Current Rating, minimum 6. This pool refills daily with proper sleep. Note: while a Daydreamer has access to their “base déan pool” , expanding the pool starts at a rank of 1 for EXP purposes.

Gleaning
Collecting déan from the wonder of dreamers while awake is called Gleaning. This process requires the Daydreamer to create something magical that causes wonder in others. It could be a performance, piece of artwork, a story or anything that makes others go “Wow.” What is made determines what needs to be checked. Then each creature that witnesses the creation in the presence of the Daydreamer will produce 1 déan for the Daydreamer, perhaps more at Storyteller discretion for more impressive or inspiring. Many Daydreamers put on elaborate parties just for such use. The déan collected from a Gleaning does not refill, it is one time use. Put this in Inventory.

Advantage: Dreamers
A more long-term solution is to become Muse or Patron to a talented dreamer. The Daydreamer makes a pact with a Dreamer, inspiring them to bring their dreams into reality, and thereby producing extra déan. While the Dreamer does not need to know the specifics of the pact, they must agree to it and the Daydreamer cannot mistreat their Dreamer. For every rank in Dreamer, the Daydreamer gains 1 déan they can use per session. This may represent a single or multiple Dreamers. A Daydreamer does need to watch after their Dreamer though, because those so touched by the Dreaming may fall to the Yearning or Burn themselves out with the passion of the Dreams, shortening their lives and turning to self-destructive behaviors to dull the intensity of their feelings.

Dream Press
A Bottle of Dreams tastes sweet and rich, like honey and wine. A Dream press is a device that presses déan out of usually unwilling and unwitting dreamers in an area. It is generally considered to be an abominable thing by most Daydreamers and Fae. For every month a Dreamer lays in a Press, they lose one of their “base déan pool” permanently. Within Four months, they become little more than sleep deprived zombies and after Eight, they become Wraiths. Dead but still tethered to the world of the living. But still, these little bottles of glowing gold, or glittering midnight blue float around on the black market at high values.

Yearning

All of a Neuma’s life, they yearn for the fantastical, the impossible, their dreams. This leads them to seek out magical things all throughout the world and their life. It is the reason they seek out magical places. It is also why they tend to congregate in groups, often forming Courts. But eventually, it becomes so overwhelming of a need that if a neuma lives long enough, they will one day return to the dreaming and never step foot in the material world again. Most Neuma don’t view this as a sad thing, just another part of life. Those who are not Neuma with a strong connection to the Dreaming, who often become Daydreamers, often also feel this yearning. It drives them to bring dreams to life through Fae magic. It may also lead to them having the same fate as a Neuma. Those lost in the dreaming, if encountered, will remember most of their life in the mortal realm, but have no desire to return.

Nightmares

Every Neuma and every Daydreamer is either a Dreamer or a Nightmare, Seelie or Unseelie, Light or Dark. This is chosen by the Player when they pick up Fae Magic. This is the character’s “Default” card casting. They can still use the Reverse casting, but they must pass a Determination check in addition to any other checks.
